Before getting started, we recommend reading the article 📘 How to create and optimize your route, to make sure you understand everything that follows.

We also suggest following the sections in order to get the most out of the Route Editor.

Understanding the Route Editor

The first step is to become familiar with the three key sections of Plannit's Route Editor. To open the editor, you can either create a new route or edit an existing one.

Here’s how the editor is structured:

  • Red Box: Allows you to search for job addresses using various criteria and filters.

  • Blue Box: Shows the map with the added addresses and search results.

  • Green Box: Displays the list of job addresses included in the route, in the specified order.

💡 Hide Search Results

Once all your addresses are added to the route, you can hide the search results to simplify the interface when optimizing.

💡 Move a Marker

Is the marker not exactly where you want it?
Select the marker and drag it on the map! The position will be saved when you save the route.

Oops, I moved a marker by mistake. What should I do?
No worries, click on the marker and use the Undo Move button.

Calculating and Optimizing the Route

This step is essential and requires a good understanding of your data. The more complete and consistent your data, the simpler and more effective the optimization will be.

Important Notes

Plannit helps you create optimized routes, but it can’t perform miracles with incomplete or incorrect data.

Also, Plannit doesn't know your specific operational constraints and depends on third-party technology (Google Maps and TomTom). Here are a few potential limitations:

Vehicle-related constraints:

  • The vehicle cannot make U-turns

  • Certain bridges or tunnels are restricted

  • Speed limits may be enforced

Third-party data issues:

  • New neighbourhoods not yet listed

  • Poorly mapped areas

  • Closed roads, outdated maps, or incorrect information

👉 Here's the recommended step-by-step to calculate and optimize your routes:

  • Start with an initial route optimization

  • Select segments, reorder them, and optimize the segment

  • Repeat for each segment

  • Move segments as needed

  • Calculate the full route

  • Save

  • Test

Optimizing Your Route

This feature lets you rearrange the address order for better efficiency.

💡 Before clicking Optimize, we recommend saving your current changes!

❗ Your start and end addresses must be valid for optimization to work correctly.

❗ For daily routes with scheduled visits in the agenda, optimizing the route will not adjust the scheduled times! If you proceed with optimization, consider updating visit times accordingly..

  1. Use the Optimize button in the top right to optimize the full route, or select a segment and click Actions / Optimize from the action bar to optimize only that segment.

💡 For larger routes, segment-based optimization typically gives better results.

  2. In the optimization options, define:

    • Route type (round trip or one-way)

    • Preferred routing style

    • Maximum vehicle speed

    • Language for driving directions

    Click Optimize.

  3. If you're optimizing by segment, repeat the steps for each segment as needed.

  4. Don’t forget to save your changes using the Save button to avoid losing your progress.

Moving a Segment

This lets you change the position of an address segment within the route, ideal for adjusting the flow of the route.

  1. Select a segment, then click the Move button in the action bar.

You’ll be prompted to choose the new position for the segment in the list.

  2. Repeat as needed for each segment.

  3. Don’t forget to save your changes using the Save button to avoid losing your progress.

Calculating the Route

This calculates the travel path between each address on your route, without changing their order.

  1. Click the Calculate button at the top right to calculate the full route, or select a segment and click Acrtions / Calculate from the action bar to calculate just that segment.

  2. In the calculation options, define:

    • Route type

    • Maximum vehicle speed

    • Language for driving directions

    Click Calculate.

  3. If calculating by segment, repeat the process for each one as needed.

  4. At this point, we recommend saving the route using the Save button before proceeding with further optimizations.
